The Land Rover Defender is an iconic silhouette that delivers everything an SUV should, and then some. Available in three body styles, the 2023 Defender is more than equipped to go head-to-head with the competition.

Brooklyn area shoppers in the market for an SUV can rely on us at Land Rover Brooklyn, as we showcase just how capable and performance-driven the brand new Defender is.

Land Rover Defender vs. BMW X5

Power and Capability

Whether you’re driving through the city, the suburbs or off-road, the Land Rover Defender excels on every type of terrain. The Defender offers three engine options to the X5’s two, with the Land Rover model’s six-cylinder engine surpassing its BMW counterpart by 60 horsepower (395 hp vs. 335 hp).

For those interested in packing even more of a punch, both models feature an eight-cylinder engine option (5.0-liter in the Defender, 4.4-liter in the X5), with both comfortably exceeding 500 horsepower. If you’re looking for superior capability, the Defender’s 8,201-pound towing capacity outdoes its BMW counterpart, with the X5 towing up to 6,603 pounds.

Space and Technology

The Defender features spacious and supportive seating, complete with customizable cargo room thanks to your choice of body style. Easily organize your belongings with 78.8 cubic feet of storage in the Defender, edging out the X5’s 72.3 cubic feet.

With greater headroom and legroom, passengers may also have a more comfortable experience in the Land Rover model. The Defender is nearly 10 inches taller than the X5, and has available all-season/all-terrain tires, which the X5 does not feature. Along with standard features like a back-up camera and remote engine start, the Defender comes with the convenience tech you need day in and day out.

Land Rover Defender vs. Porsche Cayenne

Power and Capability

The Land Rover Defender offers more versatility by offering a gas/mild electric hybrid six-cylinder engine, while the Porsche Cayenne has an all-gasoline-based lineup. Although the Cayenne has engine options that offer more horsepower, the Defender still reigns supreme in capability, outshining the Cayenne by more than 500 pounds of maximum towing capacity (8,201 pounds in the Defender vs. 7,700 pounds in the Cayenne).

Space and Technology

Similarly to the BMW X5 comparison, the Defender dominates in space and height. Despite the Cayenne’s longer wheelbase and overall length, the Land Rover SUV offers more cargo room with the four-door body style. If you have a larger traveling party, you should strongly consider going with the Defender, which seats up to seven passengers compared to the Cayenne’s maximum of five.
